So it's Hillary vs. Rudy. Well, at least, the French versions of Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani.
Segolene Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy will face off in the general election in May after having won the run-off in April. Unlike our party primaries, in France, all presidential candidates compete in one gigantic presidential primary and the top two candidates go onto the general election, a process that has some real advantages over ours but some disadvantages as well.
In any case, now that it's clear who will be carrying the banners of the Left and the Right, it's also clear to me what the next president of France will be: in a word, bad. 'Sego' vs. 'Sarko,' as the French call them: she who would be the first woman president of the French Republic and he who would remake France in his own image.
'Sego' is what the French would call 'BCBG' ('bon chic, bon genre') -- a stylish woman from 'the right kind of people' (i.e., the haute bourgeoisie) who exudes clueless privilege. Her relative youth and style overwhelmed the old guard in the Parti Socialiste and gained her the support of Socialist Party members who believed her to be the only candidate of the left (well, extremely center-left) who could beat Sarkozy in a general election.
'Sarko' is the law-and-order tough guy whose anti-immigrant rhetoric helped spark the worst riots in recent French history, with the poor suburbs of Paris and other major French cities going up in flames as unemployed youth of largely non-European (especially North African) descent reacted with fury when the interior minister labeled them thugs and miscreants. Ironically for someone who is so stridently anti-immigrant, Sarkozy himself is the son of a Hungarian immigrant.
Hillary vs. Rudy. One is completely without commitment to any fixed principle except her own political advancement who will say anything to get elected. The other is a power-hungry authoritarian who has never acknowledged an incident of police brutality and who would use the authority of the presidency to pursue a vicious campaign against people of color. Neither has the solution to France's serious social, economic and political problems. And neither has any commitment to full equality under law for LGBT people in France.
So that's the choice for the French: Bad vs. Really Bad. Sego ou Sarko.
Vive la France~! Vive la Republique~!
