Are queer
podcasters getting "F'd in the A," as my favorite queer podcaster of the day,
Ragan Fox would say, by Apple iTunes and other mainstream media outlets?"
Well, if you are as bored as I am with the same old tired hetero-centric commercial radio churned out by mega corps like
Clear Channel then the answer is probably yes.
So what's a queer to do? Why not check out some of the many independent queer podcasts created by some very talented artists and orators as well as some not so talented artists and orators (which can be even more entertaining). Since it's relatively easy to start a podcast there's an abundance of independent broadcasts available so the good news is that there are some great choices for you to explore.
Where do you find these great queercasts? Well that's the bad news. It just got a little bit harder to find them now that big media has jumped on the podcast sensation like flies on shit (think bloggin). So before you rush off to your freshly downloaded iTunes that now includes a new podcast directory consider the annoying fact that most of the featured podcasts in the Itunes directory are the very mainstream commercial content you are trying to avoid. And when iTunes does index queer podcasts why are they so often mis-categorized. I mean why is
Ragan Fox - Fox In the City (ok, I really do love him today but don't tell my husband!) in the Health category?
So skip the prominently featured ABC News, Disney, and even the Queer Eye For the Straight Guy tips and do a search on "queer" or "gay" in the iTunes directory or better yet check out the
Qpodder queer podcast directory or check out these queer podcasts:
That should be more than enough to get you started so enjoy. Let me know what you find and if you think I should start a one please let me know.
P.S. I hope Andy of
Andy's Chest will start one soon so send him e-mail and tell him Big Queer sent you!
