Yesterday the Human Rights Campaign issued a 67-page report titled "'They Want Us Exterminated': Murder, Torture, Sexual Orientation and Gender in Iraq" that claims that Iraqi militias are "carrying out a spreading campaign of torture and murder against men suspected of homosexual conduct, or of not being 'manly' enough, and Iraq authorities have done nothing to stop the killing." A spokesperson for the militia warned of a "third sex" and the "feminization" of Iraqi men. The terrorism takes the form of kidnappings off the street and even from homes of suspected homosexuals. The victims are tortured until they reveal the names of other Iraqi gay men and are then murdered. Gay sex is not a crime under Iraqi law, but it appears that "Islamic law" is what many militia leaders consider the governing law of the country. Killing homosexuals is considered an "honor killing," much like a father murdering a "socially disgraced" daughter, which means that the penalties under Iraqi law for such crimes is reportedly mitigated under a provision enacted during Saddam Hussein's reign.
Jamie Durrant, Xbox 360 designer and long-time friend of Big Queer, has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft for £45,000 (approximately $66,000) for discrimination based on his sexual orientation. The software giant bought the U.K. company for which Durrant works, Lionhead Studios, two years ago. Durrant claims he began receiving harassing emails over a year ago and that his complaints to the company's human resources department were "blatantly disregarded." He agreed to refrain from filing a formal grievance and was told that a memo would be sent to Lionhead employees reminding them to "behave responsibly," but no such memo was issued and a message with the title "Fag Boy Jim" was posted in the office kitchen.
Durrant was offered counseling and was asked to sign a document agreeing not to pursue any further action against the company, but he rightfully declined. BQ reached out to Durrant to find out if he or his attorney has a copy of the proposed agreement, but he declined to comment on the issue or make any other on-the-record statements due to the pending suit. Durrant has been on sick leave due to depression and is seeking payment for lost pay and, according to the U.K. press, "hurt feelings." (We took issue with the references to our friend's "hurt feelings," but apparently "injury to feelings" is a legitimate legal complaint on the other side of the pond.)
As for Microsoft, the company has a history of providing domestic partnership benefits and has included sexual orientation in its anti-discrimination policies, though its lack of support for Workplace Fairness legislation was an issue in 2005. BQ will post more information as it becomes available.
It's gotten a bit lost in the New York City news cycle because of this Spitzer mess, so it may be worth taking a moment to mention Oklahoma Representative Sally Kern. You know, the one who said homosexuality is a bigger threat to our nation than "terrorism or Islam." Here she is in a video put together by the HRC:
What I think Ms. Sally is missing, though, is the fact that she's not saying gays are a worse threat, she's saying we're a better threat.
Last week, tragic school shootings were once again U.S. headline news. First there was the murder of Lawrence King by his 14-year-old classmate Brandon McInerney (as reported on BQ by Fastlad); then a shooting spree at Northern Illinois University where gunman Steven Kazmierczak, 27, took the lives of 7 people (detailed in this New York Times article).
Big Mouth has a morbid obsession with school shootings for a few reasons: 1) because every kid in America has thought about exacting vengeance on his/her high school tormentors; 2) because the ultimate blame for the shootings is often placed on the shooters' consumer identities (their music, clothes, entertainment choices) and means of expression (their writings, drawings, fashion) rather the availability of guns, high school and bullying culture, the average American's love of violence, or on the shooters themselves; and 3) because the phenomenon is -- with few exceptions -- so uniquely one of young, white, American men but is not associated by the media or society as crimes of racial/ethnic or patriarchal/masculine origin. And, finally, aside from all these intellectual reasons, there is of course a question that always springs to my (and others') forebrain(s):
I stumbled on this video essay about lesbians in mainstream media and I immediately sent a note to HikingSneakers asking if we could repost her video here on BQ (she said yes).
Intelligent, honest, and witty- take a moment and listen to this this essay.
Over the way at Three Bulls!, commenter The Uncanny Canadian brings us this tidbit from some person somewhere or other moniker'd Boudiccia:
Our dear dear Boudiccia has finally explained the rationale for sodomy, thank goodness. I thought when I last engaged in sodomy, it was just for fun, but it turns out that my motives were much much darker: I am tired of sodomites and their attempts to catch and rape our children. This is the ultimate goal of their agenda and same sex marriage, rights to adopt children, partner insurance benefits, hate crime legislation, and other demands are steps to this goal. They are not gay at all, for gay is a lovely word meaning happy and jovial, but are self-loathing monsters who hate being the degenerate beings they are and so they take it out on our children, abusing and raping them to make them into the same degenerate creatures as they are. I bet some of them members of the city government in Philedelphia are members of NAMBLA, or why would they make demands for this Boy Scout Council to admit sodomite leaders?
As I said over there, I consider this a (tacky, polyblend) gauntlet:
I am tired of sodomites and their attempts to catch and rape our children. This is the ultimate goal of their agenda
I resent that vicious slander. What kind of unmotivated, unambitious layabouts would we be if -that- were our “ultimate goal?” Ffs, that’s just warming up. That’s not even getting to the -eating.- Let alone the part where we TAKE OVER THE WORLD, PINKY!!! Not to mention the Sadeian mass orgies in the public square, the public disembowelment of Christians, and of course the really snazzy assless black leather uniforms with built-in electrified metal strapons and little pink triangles over each nipple (all three of ‘em; enforced extreme bodymod is also part of the Agenda, natch).
What's the difference between anti-Semitism and homophobia? One can end your career, while the other generally gets you a pass from Hollywood and the mainstream media. Ask Mel Gibson; he should know. Gibson's alcohol-soaked anti-Semitic tirade last week provoked a firestorm of protest -- and rightly so. But his previous homophobic tirades have been lost in the shuffle. First to the anti-Jewish rant. After being arrested and stuffed inside the police car, according to a source,
Gibson began banging himself against the seat. The report says Gibson told the deputy, "You mother f****r. I'm going to f*** you." The report also says "Gibson almost continually [sic] threatened me saying he 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his
You may have read Sascha's entry on Homophobia in Poland. Unfortunately, this entry reports on homophobia in Poland, but this time in our own state of Maine.
I was recently in Maine and heard news of a disgusting hate crime that took place in this small town. Two young teenagers broke into the home of a lesbian couple and completely trashed the place. I am still sickened by the images as I continue to read updates on the case.
Please see this website, maintained by the couple's son, for the full story, photos, and even video.
I would love to hear your reactions to this story. Mine have varied since I heard the story, but currently, I'm:
