In 1994, Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys came out publicly in an interview for the UK gay magazine, Attitude. It was then when they had just released the album Very which includes a remake of Village People's Go West.
I just turned 18.
I was just in the process of coming out to myself that I was gay, in Hong Kong (which explains the British magazine). And I started reading Attitude regularly.
Although I honestly don't remember anything from that interview, knowing someone who publicly admitted his sexuality was a big deal for me. I can't tell you exactly how I reacted or how I felt at the time, but one thing that I knew for sure: I wasn't alone. There is someone out there whom I know for sure that he shares the same sexuality as mine.
15 years later, the PSB is coming "west" from the UK for their US tour this month. I can hardly wait to sing and dance to Go West again with Neil in New York in a couple of days. Well, I surely hope that it's on the run-down.
To all of you closeted celebrities out there, please do everyone a favor and come out. You will make a difference.
Sometimes it's impossible to satirize something that is as inherently ridiculous as the National Organization for Marriage's anti-gay marriage ad, which warns of the dangers of gay marriage supporters who wish to take things "further," and promotes a "rainbow coalition" that wishes to protect the sacred institution of marriage...
...but it doesn't mean that we shouldn't try! And Stephen Colbert certainly did. Check out his scathing parody of the ad:
With New York governor David Paterson announcing a bill to legalize gay marriage in his state this week, and former John McCain strategist Steve Schmidt planning to deliver a pro-gay marriage address to Log Cabin Republicans, the storm isn't just coming. It's here.
Decisions, decisions, decisions, two of our friends are in the second round finals for Logo's Big Gay Sketch Show casting competition.
Since I voted for both of them I figured it canceled out the votes for each so help me out and check out the videos below and then vote for them. So check out the videos below then make sure you vote for Jason Dudey and vote for Esther Silberstein.
The Self-Involved Bourgeois Airhead Award for December 2008 goes to Rufus Wainright. The decision is unanimous and he certainly deserves it. In an interview with the right leaning New York Press this week he said:
“Oddly enough, I’m actually not a huge gay marriage supporter. I personally don’t want to get married but I think that any law or amendment to the constitution that deals with sex and love should just be banned in general. I don’t think any government should encroach on what goes on in the bedroom at all. Frankly, if you want to marry a dog, why don’t you go ahead and marry a dog, I don’t care. I’m a complete libertarian and so I really disagree with it.”
Oddly enough I am not married to my American partner because the law here currently forbids it, Rufus. Oddly enough, as a foreign national (like you Rufus, because I’ve just remembered you’re Canadian, but you’re also – crucially – famous and rich) I can see the value of it.
It would have saved me tens of thousands of dollars I could ill afford in legal fees to immigration attorneys. I could have used that money to do other things. I might have bought a nice pair of Ray Bans or an opera ticket. I mean did you even know that heterosexual couples in bi-national relationships can pay $30 and get hitched in city hall – immigration’s usually a snap for them – but homosexual couples face stiff lawyers fees, uncertainty, discrimination, and chance. Every day. We don’t even have the luxury of idle speculation about man on dog hypothetical nuptials because we’re – I dunno – so busy fighting for our fucking lives.

Me2, a "groundbreaking" novel by queer author, M. Christian, promises to offer a "shocking new view of queer identity." These are quite some words to live up to, especially in today's cramped market of entertainment that panders to the gay community. Unfortunately, Me2, breaks no ground, nor does it shock with new views. Instead, it places itself safely in the center of the dance floor with it's shirt sticking out of its back pocket. It only took me a few pages to lose interest in this story, mainly because of a highly unlikable protagonist who is as bland as the Starbucks where he spends most of his time.
We need at least one post to lighten up a bit after the past few weeks on BQ. So check this out, Big Mouth has compiled a little alterna-queer playlist, since playlists seem to be all the rage with the kids these days. Which sends me on the following tangent: who out there remembers making mix tapes? Having to carefully pick all the songs beforehand so you only record once so songs retain the highest sound quality and don't accidentally get cut off at the end. Always ending up with three spare minutes where you tack on some song you don't like all that much because it's short. Being stuck with what you got when you listen to it the first time and realize the transition between song two and song three is way too jarring. Ah, those were the days...
All right, enough nostalgia for caveman technology!
Help me out here. I am still trying to process what I feel/think about this clip. Honestly, I am a little turned on by it. But then again, is it exploitation? With a gay porn star? What if I am straight, watching a (straight) woman host sucking lips and squeezing crotch with a female porn star? I would get excited, but we would also call that exploitation. What about this, then? Is it okay? Is it not okay?
We don't typically write about photo blogs or "guy sites" here on Big Queer but I can't resist sharing this one called Boys in the Sun. The site features images captured by multi-talented artist, photographer and award winning designer Ong as he wanders through the city.
Ong is a friend of ours and we've seen his great shots from previous projects including numerous NYC Pride's. It should be fun to watch Boys in the Sun develop and see what he's been up to as summer gets into full swing and especially after the upcoming pride events in New York.
Talking about oneself is the easiest and the hardest thing one could possibly do; the easiest, because one knows one's own story better than anyone else; but the hardest, because it is difficult to summarize a half century of experience in a matter of 15 minutes or less. Talking about oneself in front of an audience of three hundred or more people can be a particularly daunting experience, and I must admit that my heart was pounding when the six of us went on stage for the premiere of "Undesirable Elements" on April 21 at the Queens Theatre in the Park. But after the first ten minutes, it was clear that the audience was 'with us,' and I was able to relax and even enjoy the performance.
